Embedded systems design

Applicon provides services spanning the entire product development life cycle - from idea to market - covering both hardware design and firmware development.

From the initial needs-analysis, trough hardware/software development to final testing and de-bugging phases, Applicon works closely with the customers to accomplish the desired goals and exceed performance expectations. We work proactively to understand our customer’s perspective and approach with constructive, yet gentle pushback if necessary, to ensure superior project results.

Real-time monitoring

Research activities on hardware/software development and related data analysis methodologies for underwater real-time monitoring of relevant environment parameters are ongoing in Applicon.

Some offshore activities, such as fish aqua-farms, may contaminated the surrounding sea with fish excrements, uneaten chemical-laden food and antibiotics, swarms of parasites while oil-and-gas activities and renewable energy generation plants may generate noise that disturbs the marine life to some extent.

In both cases, an underwater sensor network, eventually integrated with an acoustic communication infrastructure and with a log and data analysis system, capable to measure, save and analyse, eventually in real-time, the various environment parameters of interest can be of use and support to every environment impact assessment procedure to be implemented.

Underwater technologies for comunication and localization

Applicon’s main mission is the continuous improvement of Seamodem functionalities and performance. Main efforts are current devoted to increase the distance covered by the modem and the bit-rate, in order to support in the future voice and video streaming.

As far as the development of a complete underwater localization system is concerned, Applicon is actively working on developing such a system for the need of the VISAS and NATO projects.

Such expertise will be made available to all our customers that will need to develop any sort of communication and localization proprietary system.

Electronic devices for diving safety

Applicon is also involved in the design and development of electronics devices for enhancing the health and safety of recreational and professional divers. European data indicate that the number of accidents has remained relatively constant over the past 20 years, while the number of practitioners has grown tremendously over the same period. All this would indicate that the safety of diving is generally good and steadily improving.

Despite these data, however, the risk should not be underestimated from the public. The information on it should be fair and realistic, without inappropriate exaggerations, but equally without any underestimation.

According to "2008 - Diver Alarm Network Report", in 160 (1.13 %) out of 11,869 observations were reported incidents of a procedural nature, so due to human error. Among these, the most common accidents were due to waterline problems (0.9%) followed by uncontrolled ascents (0.3%).

Along these lines, Applicon is currently developing SARIS, a patented electronic device pluggable on standard over pressure valves of scuba jackets aimed at detecting the occurrence of too fast, possibly uncontrolled, ascents of the diver. In that case, it opens automatically the jacket's overpressure valves for reducing its volume and stopping the ascent.
